It's that time of year again, summer! Well, no, in fact it's still winter, but it's time to start thinking about summer, and that means swimsuits and bicycle riding and working on your tan! No, wrong again, that means it's time to get couped up in a dark room hacking all night and wearing dark socks with shorts. And that's exactly where your friends at Neuros and Google can help!
Neuros has applied for the '08 Summer of Code so check out the program FAQ if you're not familiar with the program. Also, please check out the Neuros '08 SoC page . Even if you can't or won't participate in the program, you can still add your ideas to the list and help support the cause. Google hasn't even chosen the sponsoring organizations yet, so if you are excited about the Neuros projects, let everyone know too, the folks at Google are apparently going to decide by Mar 17th.

DVB
Another project could be FTA (Free-to-Air, unencrypted) DVB client to control USB DVB device like TwinHan StarBox satellite receiver. It should be able to control both locally attached device and remote one.
DVB indeed
yes, this would be an excellent project!
Universal IPTV project for Google SoC 2008
I'd be interested to work on a project that will let OSD to be used as universal IPTV STB. Universal meaning user suppose to easly add
new providers to the list of already supported by simple editing of config files. That will require design/implementation of unified GUI client, streaming protocols and framework/API with pluggable modules that'll do screen scraping for particular provider (similar to n-Tube). The idea is
to provide such a level of IPTV support that non-technical users will find it easier to use OSD as a way to deliver IPTV content to TV than PC.
Unfortunately, majority of IPTV providers I have in mind (ethnic TV) stream their content encoded with WMV9 at 640×480 so this project is for OSD2 only.
IPTV
sounds great, though I'm a bit confused how Universal Internet TV is different from the universal flv browser, shouldn't those two projects be integrated? Sorry if I'm being dense here.

I've been working on this project on-and-off for a while so when I saw SoC announcement thought it might be a good idea to offer. Only at that
moment I've noticed similar n-Tube. I should go and read n-Tube discussion to see if it worth to have them as separate projects. So far it looks like a lot could be shared. OTOH, content and intended audience (I have in mind ethnic minorities, often older people, who can't use anything more complicated than remote control to control their IPTV boxes) different and so GUI requirements could be quite different as well.

I see, that makes sense. Well, see where it makes sense to share and where it makes sense to have a different UI. Certainly I agree that "non techie" market is a good one for the device.
Home automation
Yet another project could be Home Automation Controller, similar to http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS9801882978.html
