[09:46] <amebix> anyone alive in here that owns an Neuros II that i could ask a question?
[09:47] <amebix> i know you can old sort through the mp3s using id3 tag on the player, but can you upload files sorted by directory and then download them having retained the same dir tree?
[09:47] <amebix> old=only

[22:30] <noiz> hey
[22:30] <noiz> anyone on?
[22:31] <srobertson> has joined #neuros
[22:31] <noiz> hey
[22:32] <srobertson> hi
[22:32] <noiz> whats up?
[22:33] <srobertson> AFAICT, the neuros has bootloader code which manages loading firmware, as well as flashing new firmware, which can't be overwritten (it's in true ROM). Is this right?
[22:33] <srobertson> In other words, can I try some stuff without too much risk of paperweight formation?
[22:33] <noiz> yeah i think so, that way people cant permanently screw up their neuros (i think)
[22:34] <srobertson> great!
[22:34] <noiz> are you interested in developing?
[22:38] <srobertson> are you interested in buggy firmware? ;)
[22:39] <noiz> cool, how long have you had a neuros?
[22:40] <srobertson> Over a year.
[22:40] <noiz> you from the US?
[22:40] <srobertson> Yup. Florida.
[22:41] <noiz> sweet, so what are you wanting to do with the firmware, just try and fix bugs?
[22:41] <srobertson> Pretty much.
[22:41] <srobertson> I'm not creative enough to add features.
[22:42] <amebix> is there any way to upload an mp3 collection sorted by directory to a neuros then download it to a pc and have the directory tree still in tact?
[22:42] <Koron|out> has joined #neuros
[22:42] <srobertson> Sure.
[22:42] <srobertson> Here's how I'd do it:
[22:42] <amebix> i know you cant sort through mp3s on the neuros itself with directories, just id3 tag right?
[22:42] <amebix> i just want to be able to take all my mp3s off my HD and free up some space, and have an mp3 player at the same time
[22:43] <amebix> i got an iPod, but you can do this with it
[22:43] <srobertson> Copy over the MP3s manually, then go into your sync program and hit 'rebuild database'.
[22:43] <amebix> so im thinking about returning it for a neuros
[22:43] <noiz> sorune keeps your directory structure
[22:44] <srobertson> Neurosen act just like USB Mass Storage devices. Only difference is there's a database which keeps track of all .mp3s, .oggs, and .wavs on it.
[22:44] <amebix> do most other mp3 players work in the same way?
[22:44] <srobertson> Some do, but I couldn't list them.
[22:45] <amebix> yeah
[22:45] <noiz> i think most do use a database since it makes it faster
[22:45] <noiz> so the player doesnt have to read all of the files
[22:45] <amebix> but it seems like i tried doing that to my ipod
[22:45] <srobertson> Ipods don't work that way.
[22:45] <amebix> copying folders of mp3s to it like a usb mass storage device
[22:46] <srobertson> The sync software deliberately obfusticates the process of copying files, so that it's one more "barrier" against "file sharing".
[22:46] <amebix> i think the support for the Neuros seems to be much better anyway
[22:46] <noiz> the neuros has great support
[22:46] <amebix> yeah, funny thing is, thats not even what i want it for, prolly the one time in my life where im not trying to pirate shit
[22:47] <amebix> ;p
[22:47] <Koron> has quit [Read error: 110 (Connection timed out)]
[22:47] <amebix> also i suspect that its disabled in the ipod because of contracts with itunes
[22:47] <amebix> and i cannot accept that
[22:47] <noiz> yeah, i hate itunes
[22:48] <noiz> its way too controlling
[22:48] <amebix> yeah
[22:48] <amebix> one thing im not quite sure about also
[22:48] <amebix> on the neuros site
[22:48] <amebix> you can order the "HD" one and the "Bundle"
[22:48] <amebix> both are players + backpacks right?
[22:48] <noiz> yeah
[22:48] <srobertson> One just has an extra backpack.
[22:48] <amebix> just the one that says like "80gb HD" is like a 64mb player with an 80gb HD
[22:48] <noiz> but the bundle has more internal memory on the non-backpack part
[22:49] <amebix> yeah
[22:49] <amebix> ok thats what i thought
[22:49] <amebix> has all the firmware sources and the schematics been released yet?
[22:49] <noiz> but unfortunately the firmware treats all units as 64mb ones...
[22:49] <noiz> they said they are releasing the schematics
[22:50] <noiz> look at open.neurosaudio.com
[22:50] <amebix> when did the NeurosII come out?
[22:50] <noiz> if you want the schematics right now you could email them and they would probably give them to you
[22:50] <noiz> i think around july
[22:50] <amebix> and it still has all those firmware problems?
[22:51] <noiz> like what?
[22:51] <amebix> thats the one thing that is kind of diverting me from buying one right now, seems like a read about a ton of somewhat critical firmware problems on the forums
[22:51] <noiz> i think the firmware doesnt have many flaws in it right now
[22:52] <amebix> like ogg skipping
[22:52] <noiz> thats only the really high quality oggs
[22:52] <srobertson> That's very rare, and it's fixed in the beta firmware
[22:52] <noiz> i have ogg q5 and have never had a skip
[22:52] <amebix> yeah, i think im just going to get one anyway
[22:52] <srobertson> You'll be pleased.
[22:52] <noiz> most def
[22:52] <amebix> what about the NeurosIII ?
[22:53] <srobertson> Not for a while.
[22:53] <amebix> my main problem is that i just didnt want to lose how my mp3s are sorted, like if i have to reinstall the OS or something
[22:53] <srobertson> Not a problem at all.
[22:53] <srobertson> Neuros == hard drive.
[22:53] <amebix> yeah but so is the iPod
[22:53] <amebix> and i just assumed that would function in the way i wanted it
[22:53] <amebix> and it doesnt
[22:54] <noiz> yeah, sorune keeps the directory structure automatically and NDBM can be configured to do it too, or you could just use it as a hard drive
[22:54] <amebix> how many levels deep?
[22:54] <amebix> i think i have mine genre -> artist -> album -> file
[22:54] <noiz> then it should keep that
[22:55] <amebix> and when you rebuild the DB itll just probe those dirs and add em to the playlist?
[22:55] <noiz> with sorune you just have to put in where the directory starts (ie. like documents and settings, so it doesnt have a folder named documents and settings on the neuros)
[22:55] <noiz> yeah
[22:55] <noiz> and it doesnt take that long to rebuild
[22:56] <noiz> and you could even keep a .exe copy of sorune on the neuros so you could rebuild from any computer

[23:35] <amebix> oh ok, awesome
[23:36] <amebix> yeah im gonna send my ipod back and get a neuros
[23:36] <Rez> in fact, I have a debian-sarge mirror on mine as well

[23:51] <JoshTriplett> Hello. I'm considering the purchase of a Neuros as a gift for someone (who loves music but is not tech-savvy), and I'm wondering if people would be willing to provide some information on it.
[23:52] <Starkey> has quit [Remote closed the connection]
[23:52] <JoshTriplett> First of all, how easy is the player interface? Ease of navigation, ease of finding the music you want to play, etc?
[23:54] <JoshTriplett> Second, how about the synchronization manager? Ease of ripping CDs and putting them on the player?
[23:55] <JoshTriplett> (Keeping in mind that the large task of ripping her existing CD collection would probably be done by me. :) )
[23:55] <JoshTriplett> Anyone?
[23:57] <noiz> has joined #neuros
[23:57] <JoshTriplett> Third, is the device rock-solid? Never crashes or has any strange problems?
[23:58] <amebix> i don't own one, but i really doubt anyone in here will be like
[23:58] <amebix> "it sucks! don't buy it!"
[23:59] <noiz> first: i think it is pretty easy to navigate through the menus, most of my friends have been able to navigate through the menus and find things
[23:59] <noiz> second: the official sync manager is really slow and i dont really recommend using it...instead try sorune or ndbm
