[08:06] <JohnDesigner> Does anyone here use the Cellphone keypad input method on the OSD?
[08:13] <greyback> JohnDesigner: (f you're looking to see if anyone uses it) my housemate does
[08:16] <JohnDesigner> greyback: but you do not?
[08:17] <JohnDesigner> we're looking at updating it a little (mostly some minor graphic issues) and I wonder if its worth the trouble.
[08:17] <greyback> JohnDesigner: I prefer the other way to be honest, it's maybe not as fast, but you're less likely to make an error (2 keypresses detected instead of 3)
[08:18] <greyback> Personally I think it's too much choice
[08:18] <greyback> People won't know what they're missing if they never see an alternative
[08:18] <JohnDesigner> good points
[08:19] <JohnDesigner> I was tempted to kill it as soon as the soft keyboard was done, but the t9 was there already.
[08:20] <JohnDesigner> and some ppl have reported liking the speed of the t9 bc they are used to it.
[08:21] <greyback> Yep, that's my mate's reasoning. And since the IR response has improved, it's less dodgy too.
[08:21] <JohnDesigner> the t9 gives me a headache. but I'm not part of the t9 texting crowd so...
[08:24] <greyback> SMS texting is a phenomenon here, everyone does it so everyone is used to it. I just don't like it's aesthetic for tv input - perhaps this is more an opinion thing than a one-is-better-than-the-other thing
[08:26] <greyback> I suppose from an efficiency point of view, t9 uses 12 keys on the remote, keyboard-input uses only 5.
[08:28] <greyback> Maybe you should stick up a poll on the forums, ask those folk
[08:33] <JohnDesigner> The good part of this issue is that most of the work is done on the AZ version of t9
[08:34] <JohnDesigner> but it will need some adjustment for color levels and such. Adding a 'cursor' of sorts to make the selected items stand out a bit more
[08:34] <JohnDesigner> err, selected item (singular)
[08:35] <JohnDesigner> needing a cursor is a trickle down created by wanting the whole thing to be brighter.
[08:37] <greyback> That would help it alright, show more feedback of what the OSD sees. Cursor steps along each character to show if you're on a, b or c?
[08:37] <JohnDesigner> make the non-selected text brighter, then the white selected letter is not obvious.
[08:38] <JohnDesigner> yes, you have the idea
[08:38] <JohnDesigner> currently, the selected letter is highlighted by difference in color (white vs meduim grey), but that makes it look dingy
[08:39] <greyback> I do like shimmers around characters, but it's a bit disney I suppose :)
[08:39] <JohnDesigner> a year ago it was a simple way to not use graphics (slowed down nanoX from what I'm told)
[08:40] <JohnDesigner> now that we are using qtopia, graphics are not as taboo
[08:40] <JohnDesigner> by graphics I mean picture files.
[08:41] <greyback> I get ya, also the double-buffering helps simple animations
[08:41] <JohnDesigner> shimmers my be a tough on to do, but throwing a png/gif cursor is not.
[08:42] <JohnDesigner> now the goal is to not make them look too computer-like.
[08:45] <greyback> I see. I gave trunk a whirl last night, but I guess PAL support isn't working yet. But I can see the changes, the fonts looked good, nice & big, I like the way menus have fewer options too. The "working" circle of dots thing is a bit crude yet tho.
[08:49] <JohnDesigner> PAL is on the way very shortly. I have yet to see the intended font as that was input a few days ago.
[08:50] <JohnDesigner> that working circle of dots is a band-aid until optimization.
[08:51] <JohnDesigner> much is happening pretty fast now.
[08:56] <greyback> It's obvious to see. I was surprised how many apps in the trunk were working, considering when ye began with Qt. And it's nicely responsive too. It was a good decision.
[09:00] <JohnDesigner> Seems to be a good choice so far. Most of what is there was (graphically) put together rapidly. QT designer is supposed to let me change the layouts directly or at least using the same terms.
[09:01] <JohnDesigner> so a lot of nuance will be added to the layouts in a much easier way than before.
[10:38] <daurnimator> mac starts soon
[12:03] <greyback> Hmmm, I wouldn't be too worried about the new Apple TV. Aside from rentals (which are pretty dear & restrictive) it's not got a whole lot new. And I'd like to see how the streaming holds up in demand.
[12:06] <greyback> And the cheek of asking iTouch owners for $20 to get a few extra apps. Pah
[13:58] <JoeyBorn> hi all
[13:58] <vmarks> hi
[13:59] <greyback> JoeyBorn: How you doin' Mr. B
[13:59] <JoeyBorn> recovering from CES!
[13:59] <greyback> It looked pretty mad from the coverage, I'll give it that
[14:00] <greyback> I hope those Gizmodo lads with the TV-off clicker didn't strike your stall
[14:40] <JoeyBorn> hah, no
[15:35] <greyback> crweb: any recommendations for a good Qt4 book?
[21:06] <BooTerror> hey. when was the last time Ycros was in here ?
[21:25] <may1937> Unholy-: my somewhat incomplete logs show last july
[21:26] <Unholy-> lol thanks
[21:26] <Unholy-> i looked on nickserv. said 3 hours ago
[21:26] <Unholy-> ill wait around for him.
[21:26] <Unholy-> old friend.
[21:27] <may1937> guess he stopped coming in here
[21:27] <Unholy-> ive been looking for him for a long time now.
[21:27] <Unholy-> and searched google and boom this # popped up
[21:35] <may1937> it's funny we had quite a few serious discussions and i don't even know his name or email
[21:41] <daurnimator> mmm, same
[21:41] <Unholy-> lol
[21:41] <Unholy-> hes a good guy
[21:41] <daurnimator> 4 hours ago
[21:41] <Unholy-> his name is michael
[21:41] <daurnimator> the bastard caused me to buy a zaurus >.<
[21:41] <daurnimator> waste of money
[21:41] <Unholy-> zaurus ?
[21:42] <daurnimator> Zaurus C3200
[21:42] <Unholy-> and that is ?
[21:42] <daurnimator> google
[21:42] <Unholy-> damn
[21:42] <Unholy-> expensive
[21:42] <Unholy-> re-sell it on ebay
[21:55] <daurnimator> mmm, how much do they go for
[21:55] <daurnimator> I hate selling things for less than I got them for
[21:55] <daurnimator> so.... I generally don't sell things
[21:56] <daurnimator> one store is selling them for $600
[21:56] <daurnimator> but they aren't selling
[21:57] <Unholy-> i saw another selling for 799
[21:58] <daurnimator> I would be happy getting rid of it for US$400
[21:58] <daurnimator> it IS the ultimate pda
[21:58] <daurnimator> but.... I have no use for it
[21:59] <daurnimator> no wifi either
[22:01] <Unholy-> that sucks
[22:01] <daurnimator> I have a wifi CF card for it
[22:01] <daurnimator> but.... its annoying
