[07:28] <MattJ> .
[07:56] <daurnimator> hey MattJ
[07:56] <MattJ> Hey daurnimator
[07:57] <daurnimator> happen to know how to find out your root password when you don't know it?
[07:57] <daurnimator> I have ro access to /
[07:57] <MattJ> Yeah, use Ubuntu :)
[07:57] <MattJ> How come you don't know it?
[07:58] <MattJ> Can you access /etc/shadow?
[07:58] <daurnimator> I got an image for my zaurus from some guy
[07:58] <daurnimator> just finished 4 hours setting it up on here
[07:59] <daurnimator> and I've realised I don't have the password to the damn thing
[08:00] <MattJ> If you can access /etc/shadow, apt-get install john, and it can crack the password
[08:00] <daurnimator> I have Read Only access to the root filesystem
[08:01] <daurnimator> I cannot run anything else
[08:01] <MattJ> Copy /etc/shadow out, and run it on another PC
[08:03] <daurnimator> ah, thanks
[08:03] <daurnimator> uh, odd
[08:05] <daurnimator> happen to have it installed?
[08:08] <daurnimator> MattJ?
[08:13] <MattJ> daurnimator: Sorry, was afk
[08:13] <MattJ> Yes, I have it installed
[08:13] <MattJ> I use it for benchmarking
[08:14] <daurnimator> pastebin.com
[08:21] <MattJ> Just figuring which of my computers is fastest to run it on
[08:24] <MattJ> daurnimator: It took less than a second xD
[08:25] <MattJ> daurnimator: Write "root" on a piece of paper, and hold it in the mirror
[08:25] <daurnimator> well, in the meantime, the hdd has somehow erased itself
[08:30] <daurnimator> [01:30:26] <daurnimator> i don't know if its a good or a bad thing
[08:30] <daurnimator> [01:30:38] <daurnimator> but I just re-wrote the partition table; rebooted
[08:30] <daurnimator> [01:30:41] <daurnimator> and its back to normal
[10:01] <mcr> hi.
[10:02] <mcr> my son watched a taped thomas video 12 times yesterday. Around the 7th time, the playback froze, but the UI still worked for awhile.
[10:02] <mcr> the UI eventually (3-4 minutes of playing to get the video restarted) died, and I power cycled... is this a familiar occurance?
[10:03] <JimPA> from USB drive?
[10:04] <JimPA> I'm seeing weird behavior with my USB drive after having it attached for many hours. Simply power-cycling the USB drive seems to resolve the issue for me right now
[10:04] <mcr> JimPA, it's NFS.
[10:05] <JimPA> hard wired to your network then?
[10:18] <mcr> yes, 100Mb/s cable to basement.
[10:18] <mcr> but, the UI froze after a few minutes. initially the UI was fine. I wondered if the "DSP" I've read about had crashed.
[10:25] <MattJ> mcr: I know those Thomas-on-repeat kind of children :)
[10:26] <MattJ> No problems here, but all videos are on a USB drive
[10:26] <MattJ> I believe pressing the 'home' key kills what is in the foreground, and takes you to the main menu
[10:27] <MattJ> The DSP would not cause the UI to stop responding afaik
[10:27] <mcr> I'm wondering if the DSP went into a bad state, and after a few minutes the UI got stuck trying to talk it.
[10:27] <mcr> trying to talk to it, that is.
[10:28] <MattJ> What firmware are you using?
[10:28] <mcr> the good news is that 5pm last night, the TV switched to TreeHouse so that the Neuros could tape Thomas and friends. My wife couldn't figure out how I had changed the TV from the bathroom :-)
[10:28] <MattJ> :D
[10:29] <mcr> not a very interesting episode, I think I'll delete it.
[10:29] <mcr> the (lack of) time zone stuff annoys me a lot.
[10:30] <MattJ> Time zones on the OSD?
[10:30] <JohnDesigner> oh? could you give me an example?
[10:33] <mcr> the OSD has no concept of time zones.
[10:33] <JohnDesigner> mcr: for daylight savings changes ?
[10:33] <mcr> so if you have it set to a proper clock (by rdate), which would be in UTC, such that the files it creates on NFS are correct time, then the whole unit is in UTC.
[10:34] <mcr> if you set it in local time, then the files on disk are wrong.
[10:34] <mcr> having the files on disk wrong is easier than adding 5 hours.
[10:34] <mcr> DST would just occur perfectly if it had an /etc/localtime
[10:35] <JohnDesigner> mcr: would you mind making a request in bugzilla with the details?
[10:36] * Xorlev  waves hand
[10:36] <mcr> about DST/localtime? I can do that.
[10:36] <JohnDesigner> mcr: or posting to the ML?
[10:36] <Xorlev> There is no OSD
[10:36] <mcr> I just can't do the ML... too many ML.
[10:36] <mcr> I'll ask Russell if he has posted about it already.
[10:37] <JohnDesigner> bugzilla is better anyway
[10:37] <mcr> he said this problem occured with CIFS as well as NFS.
[10:39] <mcr> waiting for bugzilla email for new account.
[10:41] <JohnDesigner> a new account made just now or a while ago?
[10:41] <JohnDesigner> iirc, i didn't get an email from my first attempt is why I ask
[11:24] <vmarks> hello JohnDesigner .
[11:24] <JohnDesigner> hiya vmarks
[11:26] <vmarks> how are you?
[11:26] <JohnDesigner> not to bad, and yourself?
[11:29] <vmarks> JohnDesigner, getting better, baby! I'm back from macworld, and have snakes in my boots.
[11:32] <JohnDesigner> Snakes? that sounds serious
[11:39] <vmarks> keeps me lively, cowboy.
[11:40] <JohnDesigner> you cow punchers live on the edge, by cracky
[11:41] <JohnDesigner> how was macworld? Did you slobber over anything particularly cool?
[11:42] <vmarks> you know, tough question. lots of convenient goodies, few things earth shattering.
[11:42] <vmarks> I quite like the macbook air, but don't have a burning need for one.
[11:42] <vmarks> I'm happy with the iphone software update.
[11:42] <vmarks> griffin has a neat dock that charges four iPods at once.
[11:42] <vmarks> good for the family.
[11:43] <vmarks> there were some excellent companies doing neat things in leather for ipods and phones.
[11:43] <vmarks> sena and incipio are worth looking at.
[11:43] <vmarks> software wise, there's a company that has an incredibly cool product for doing soundtracks for video
[11:44] <vmarks> based in part on the intensity of colors on the screen at any given beat within a measure.
[11:44] <vmarks> so you not only have beat per measure analysis but also color intensity matched to pitch.
[11:44] <vmarks> which was pretty cool.
[11:49] <JohnDesigner> that does sound innovative (pardon the pun)
[11:51] <JohnDesigner> Sena and incipico eh? I'll take a look at those. I don't know of a Co that makes really good looking AND functioning soft cases
[11:52] <vmarks> those are the two that impressed me.
[12:33] <gremlin[it]> hi all!
[13:10] <JohnDesigner> hiya gremlin[it]
[13:13] <gremlin[it]> hi JohnDesigner !
[14:02] <gremlin[it]> ping nerochiaro
[14:03] <ljp> nice review at pocketnow.com
[14:05] <nerochiaro> gremlin[it]: i'm pretty much dead now, but how can i help you ?
[14:05] <nerochiaro> ljp: didn't read that yet
[14:06] <gremlin[it]> probably yes .. with the stardard firmware how can i obtain a serial console ?!
[14:06] <nerochiaro> it actually happens automatically
[14:06] <gremlin[it]> nope ;(
[14:07] <nerochiaro> you attach the serial to your PC, configure it as explained in the wiki (bitrate etc)
[14:07] <gremlin[it]> i see all messages but no login prompt
[14:07] <nerochiaro> ah
[14:07] <nerochiaro> i have to press a key to get it
[14:07] <gremlin[it]> yes and i'm able to interact with u-boot ...
[14:08] <gremlin[it]> no ..
[14:08] <nerochiaro> then it's weird, you should be able to get the login prompt as well. can you post a log of your boot somewhere on some pastebin ?
[14:08] <gremlin[it]> a specila key o 'any' key ?
[14:08] <nerochiaro> any key
[14:08] <gremlin[it]> sure wait
[14:08] <nerochiaro> well, ENTER is sure
[14:12] <gremlin[it]> nerochiaro rafb.net
[14:14] <nerochiaro> it's not complete
[14:14] <nerochiaro> it should load some more stuff i think
[14:14] <nerochiaro> does it really stop there ?
[14:15] <gremlin[it]> yes
[14:15] <gremlin[it]> other message after are
[14:15] <gremlin[it]> login[939]: root login on 'pts/0'
[14:15] <gremlin[it]> (tvp5150(i2c_write)) retry [2]
[14:15] <gremlin[it]> (tvp5150(i2c_read)) retry [2]
[14:15] <gremlin[it]> (tvp5150(i2c_read)) retry [1]
[14:15] <gremlin[it]> (tvp5150(i2c_read)) retry [0]
[14:15] <gremlin[it]> the login is cause i login via telnet
[14:16] <nerochiaro> you sure your /dev/ directory is good ?
[14:16] <gremlin[it]> i didn't touch ...
[14:16] <nerochiaro> when you copied to install into the rootfs, maybe you did something wrong there
[14:17] <gremlin[it]> i never overwrite rootfs on the flash
[14:17] <nerochiaro> ah you're not booting over NFS, sorry
[14:17] <gremlin[it]> yes .. also kerner was dowloaded via tftp
[14:18] <gremlin[it]> i use the flash inly to change u-boot envonment variables
[14:18] <nerochiaro> wait. kernel via TFTP but rootfs from flash ?
[14:19] <gremlin[it]> at now i'm using only data from flash ... from last stable official firmware
[14:19] <nerochiaro> so the rootfs is in flash, but not the kernel
[14:19] <nerochiaro> i never tried that. but i don't see why it should not work
[14:19] <nerochiaro> it's strange
[14:20] <gremlin[it]> no no all from flash .. immgine i'm using a normal osd with last official firmware without any hacking
[14:20] <nerochiaro> well, then i would suggest you re-flash it again, because something seems to wrong ;)
[14:21] <gremlin[it]> ohh ok ...
[14:21] <nerochiaro> eh, sorry
[14:22] <gremlin[it]> after some 'esc' typed into the serial terminal i got more output rafb.net
[14:24] <nerochiaro> try pressing ctrl+c
[14:24] <nerochiaro> and then ENTER
[14:25] <gremlin[it]> nothing
[14:25] <gremlin[it]> every time i type 3 times ESC last pastebin is repeated
[14:25] <nerochiaro> did you see anything on the screen ?
[14:27] <gremlin[it]> .. typing the 'enter' key on the numeric keypad (for minicom isn't a true ENTER key) i got this message
[14:27] <gremlin[it]> WARNING: Unknown escape sequence ESC 'O' 'M'.
[14:27] <gremlin[it]> (If you're trying to type a real escape, you have to press it 3 times.)
[14:27] <nerochiaro> something in the way you have configged minicom, probably
[14:28] <nerochiaro> so in the end before you sending a single ESC to the OSD
[14:29] <nerochiaro> but what do you see on the OSD tv output ?
[14:29] <gremlin[it]> don't know ... i don't have TV connected ...
[14:29] <nerochiaro> aww
[14:30] <nerochiaro> any the time you press ESC you get _all_ the stuff in this page ? rafb.net
[14:30] <gremlin[it]> yes!
[14:30] <gremlin[it]> esc 3 times
[14:31] <nerochiaro> i don't know why , but it seems that your terminal is attached to some application instead of getting you a login console. and when you press ESC you force that app to restart
[14:31] <nerochiaro> telnet into the OSD and check with ps what the are the apps
[14:31] <nerochiaro> running
[14:32] <nerochiaro> also, what version of the firmware did you say you were using ?
[14:33] <gremlin[it]> last stable i don't remember ...
[14:34] <nerochiaro> i ask because some ancient versions were attaching the console to the window server and you had to kill it with ctrl+c before getting a login console
[14:34] <nerochiaro> just wanted to be sure you are not by mistake on an old one
[14:34] <gremlin[it]> output of ps rafb.net
[14:34] <gremlin[it]> any way to check the version from inside ?
[14:35] <nerochiaro> maybe from uboot, i can't recall right now
[14:36] <nerochiaro> but what you see in ps are 4 instances of the same processes. everytime you press ESC you spawn more and they hang
[14:36] <nerochiaro> i also don't see what can be causing that issue
[14:36] <nerochiaro> especially since you get to login on telent
[14:37] <nerochiaro> very bizzarro
[14:37] <nerochiaro> you also have a ton of zombie processes
[14:37] <gremlin[it]> NTOSD U-Boot 1.1.4 (Dec 30 2007 - 09:42:38)
[14:38] <gremlin[it]> cur_uboot=1.60
[14:38] <gremlin[it]> cur_kernel=1.60
[14:38] <gremlin[it]> cur_rootfs=1.60
[14:40] <nerochiaro> it's recent
[14:40] <nerochiaro> i don't really know what's happening
[14:40] <gremlin[it]> hahah
[14:41] <gremlin[it]> i notice a command on u-boot "diskboot" is possible to boot (kernel + rootfs) from compact-flash ?
[14:42] <nerochiaro> no one that i know of has ever tried that
[14:42] <gremlin[it]> ahahahah ok i'll try :)
[14:42] <gremlin[it]> lat test ... i disconnect and attach on tv so at least i undestand if it work or not
[14:48] <gremlin[it]> it work as player !
[14:48] <gremlin[it]> firware is 3.33-1.60
[14:49] <gremlin[it]> firmware (i still have the file in the SD card)
[14:49] <nerochiaro> you see the user interface and can go around with the remote ?
[14:52] <gremlin[it]> yes ... also i show some images and the beginnign of a divx ...
[14:52] <nerochiaro> (i have a terrible headache. i'm about to go to sleep with some painkillers in a few minutes)
[14:53] <nerochiaro> try pressing ESC (3 times) and see what happens to the GUI
[14:53] <gremlin[it]> i can't now ...
[14:53] <gremlin[it]> i'll do ... and do a report ...
[14:54] <nerochiaro> eh, try it next time
[14:54] <gremlin[it]> good night nerochiaro !!
[14:54] <nerochiaro> i'm off to bed. i'm dead
[14:54] <nerochiaro> bye
[14:54] <gremlin[it]> thanks!!!!
[14:54] <nerochiaro> no problem, sorry i could not solve it
