[00:29] <mattl> i'm actually wondering if the OSD we have is defective.
[00:29] <mattl> i mean.. can't play more than 5 seconds of audio without crapping out.
[13:20] <JoeBorn> hi all
[13:21] <mattl> hey JoeBorn
[13:24] <JoeBorn> mattl: howdy
[13:49] <mattl> JoeBorn: how's it going? we picked up at OSD yesterday at the Free Software Foundation
[13:49] <JoeBorn> at the FSF?
[13:50] <JoeBorn> one of the samples we sent them a long time ago?
[13:50] <mattl> no no, johnsu01 paid for it with his own monies.
[13:51] <JoeBorn> oh, great. what's the connection with the FSF? Sorry I'm dense
[13:51] <mattl> oh, we work there :)
[13:52] * MattJ  != mattl (if that might be the source of confusion) :)
[13:53] <mattl> though mattl and mattj are from the same country and not too far apart.
[13:53] <MattJ> Oh?
[13:53] <JoeBorn> MattJ: yeah, no I kind of guessed the !=
[13:53] <mattl> well, i'm from the UK.. South West. Except, I now live in Boston, MA.
[13:54] <JoeBorn> well, mattl thanks and welcome aboard so to speak.
[13:54] <JoeBorn> we're looking to get TI working with the FSF more to sponsor projects, release documentation etc.
[13:54] <mattl> what's the connection with TI?
[13:54] <JoeBorn> There's a lot of excitement surrouding free software
[13:54] <JoeBorn> well, TI makes the chips that power both the current and next generation of Neuros device
[13:55] <mattl> oh i see. neat.
[13:55] <mattl> when's the next gen due? will it be more powerful? the only complaint i have so far with the OSD is that it seems to choke playing even a large MP3 from an SD card.
[13:56] <JoeBorn> well, that's a bug with the software,
[13:56] <JoeBorn> that's not really a horsepower issue per se.
[13:56] <mattl> oh good :)
[13:56] <JoeBorn> next gen will be available Q4, with dev samples in a couple months.
[13:56] <mattl> so, it can be fixed... i'm glad someone has finally made a hackble device.
[13:57] <mattl> neat, well don't forget us when you're sending out samples.. ;)
[13:57] <JoeBorn> certainly won't
[13:57] <johnsu01> I couldn't get it to play an unencrypted uncompressed VOB without excessive choppiness over USB, but I wonder if it would be better playing from an 8GB SD?
[13:57] <JoeBorn> well, VOBs give problems I'm afraid
[13:57] <JoeBorn> I believe CF and possibly SD less so
[13:58] <mattl> don't we need to keep the CF card in the machine though?
[13:58] <JoeBorn> I've even heard of better success with network streaming
[13:58] <JoeBorn> yeah :(
[13:59] <mattl> it played youtube pretty well.
[13:59] <mattl> so, the network is certainly functioniing at some speed
[14:00] * MattJ  is going to release a new version of his web interface this week
[14:00] <MattJ> Quite excited about it :)
[14:01] <mattl> JoeBorn: do you know of any way to control the volume from the device itself?
[14:05] <JoeBorn> oh gain control, no, not yet
[14:06] <JoeBorn> bugzilla.neurostechnology.com
[14:18] <SlvrHmr> Anyone available/mind asking some user questions? I'm not a developer or a very good hacker.
[14:21] <JoeBorn> SlvrHmr: sure, ask away
[14:22] <SlvrHmr> thank you... I thought about downloading the IRC logs and searching them, but this is not developer stuff
[14:23] <SlvrHmr> I downloaded and ran the OSD ftpserver from an SD card, but login with root and no passwd won't allow me in
[14:24] <SlvrHmr> I'd like to be able to access the USB drive connected to the OSD via ftp from my PC... since I simply can't find a way to get my NAS to work with the OSD
[14:25] <JoeBorn> login to the ftp server won't work?
[14:26] <JoeBorn> why won't the NAS work with the OSD BTW?
[14:26] <SlvrHmr> I get to the ftp server on the OSD, but login with "root" and no password fails
[14:26] <SlvrHmr> the OSD sees the NAS, but demands a username & password... no combination I've set up on the NAS.. seems to work
[14:27] <JoeBorn> where did you get those login credentials for the ftp server?
[14:27] <SlvrHmr> in the readme file for the server in the download
[14:27] <JoeBorn> oic
[14:28] <JoeBorn> crweb wrote the ftp server, BTW I don't know if he's around or not
[14:28] <JoeBorn> SlvrHmr: what version of the firmware are you using?
[14:29] <SlvrHmr> the newest... 3.33-1.73-04.81t
[14:36] <SlvrHmr> Still around, Joe?
[15:00] <JoeBorn> sorry, I'm back
[15:07] <mattl> JoeBorn: playing an episode of Monk over the wired network, plays beautifully.
[15:07] <JoeBorn> great, thats an ISO?
[15:08] <mattl> DivX.
[15:08] <JoeBorn> ahh right, sounds more like it.
[15:09] <mattl> So, for my needs, playing torrents and rips to a TV, the OSD works well. For johnsu01 who has a load of DVDs on a USB disk, as VOBs, it's going to take some effort.
[15:09] <JoeBorn> yeah, I'm afraid so.
[15:10] <JoeBorn> I've heard that NFS streaming people have had luck with that.
[15:10] <JoeBorn> but unfortunately it depends on bitrate
[15:10] <mattl> Would plugging in an external, $30 DVD player and getting the OSD to record the DVD help?
[15:10] <JoeBorn> certainly the next generation will handle those with no sweat, but I know that's no consolation
[15:11] <JoeBorn> well, yeah if you record from a DVD player, you'll be fine.
[15:12] <MattJ> Hmm, SlvrHmr may have had some luck with samba maybe :/
[15:13] <mattl> JoeBorn: you might have to send a couple of the next gen ones on long term loan ;)
[15:14] <JoeBorn> hey, happy to, just lobby your folks on a gcc port to the chip's DSP core :)
[15:15] <mattl> done.
[15:31] <jkridner> :)
[15:32] <jkridner> mattl, if you are needing any docs on the core and cannot find them on the web, feel free to contact me.
[15:32] <jkridner> the more hackable we can make the chip, the better.
[16:22] <MattJ> crweb! The scheduler talks to me!
[18:06] <vmarks> MattJ, I have medication that can help you with that.
[18:12] <MattJ> vmarks: :P
[21:24] <johnsu01> URL for source code at wiki.neurostechnology.com is wrong..
[21:24] <johnsu01> svn.neurostechnology.com is 404
[21:27] <mattl> seems like a bunch of stuff is 404 there. i'm trying to get to svn.neurostechnology.com
[21:27] <MattJ> You get a 404 for that?
[21:28] <MattJ> The svn URL works for me
[21:28] <MattJ> Regarding the wiki... I don't know where things have moved to recently
[21:28] <mattl> hmm. works now.
[21:28] <mattl> weird.
[21:28] <MattJ> Otherwise I would fix it
[21:34] <mattl> the osd really needs adduser, who, etc.
[21:34] <MattJ> That would just overcomplicate it for most people
[21:34] <MattJ> But sometimes I agree :)
[21:40] <mattl> MattJ: do you have everything set up to compile stuff? wanna make me a wget binary?
[21:40] <MattJ> mattl: Sure
[21:40] <mattl> thanks mate.
[21:40] <mattl> if you ever come to boston, we'll buy you beer.
[21:40] <MattJ> Heh :)
[21:40] <MattJ> Are you using the official, or Qt firmware?
[21:43] <mattl> er.. Dev?
[21:44] <mattl> show me the Qt firmware!
[21:44] <MattJ> Heh, I don't know where to find it now, except in SVN
[21:44] * johnsu01  is slowly checking out SVN
[21:45] <MattJ> People began using the nightly builds, and causing problems for themselves, so I think they (re?)moved them
[21:45] <mattl> nice.
[21:48] <johnsu01> it takes about 2 minutes+ to mount nfs
[21:49] <MattJ> Never tried NFS, I use samba
[21:49] <johnsu01> vob over nfs almost worked, just out of sync
[21:50] <MattJ> wget has the longest configure I have ever seen...
[21:50] <mattl> welcome to gnu
[21:50] <MattJ> Heh
[21:51] <MattJ> There is the possibility that it is just looping :P
[21:51] <MattJ> er
[21:51] <MattJ> I think it is!
[21:51] <mattl> hah
[21:52] <MattJ> Grr
[21:52] <MattJ> Some madness with the clock in the VM
[21:53] <MattJ> "Sun Jan 13 07:23:03 CST 2008"
[21:53] <MattJ> wget 1.11 was released on the 26th, lol
[22:10] <MattJ> mattl: matthewwild.co.uk
[22:10] <MattJ> Hope it works :)
[22:11] <MattJ> Appears to
[23:08] <MattJ> nn
[23:44] <johnsu01> What's going on here?
[23:44] <johnsu01> ~ $ cp /media/SD-card/wget .
[23:44] <johnsu01> cp: cannot remove './wget': No such file or directory
