There's a great deal of debate as to exactly what folks want out of the PC side supporting the N3, but everyone agrees that flexibility is desired.
Of course if you just want a device that's not connected with any software, then the N3 will work just like an external hard-drive, but there is certainly a group (myself included) that wants something to sync databases from PC to device.

Is this a reasonable candidate for that software for the N3? Anyone used it?

Not now...
Songbird's way too early in the game to be considered the perfered app to use with the Neuros 3.... from what I understand the N3 is supposed to be out sometime in 2006? Right?
I think it might be a year or two before Songbird is really feasable...this first version they've released is more of a proof of concept than anything else.
I would just suggest not having any player of choice. Leave that to the consumer. Bob might want to use his N3 with one thing under Windows, while I might want to use mine with Rythmbox, Banshee, or Amarok in Linux. Just drop all the songs in a folder(s) on the N3 and let it's software sort them out on it's own.... just treat it like a portable hard drive.
Not Sure Yet
I just switched from MediaMonkey to Songbird and am having a decent experience but I think it's way too early in the game to make a judgement. Songbird is only at 0.1 and if you read the roadmap for the next 0-3 months it's clear that there's a LONG way yet to go. I think the best answer for your question is yes, Songbird is a possibility that should be reevaluated when the shipping date of the N3 is nearer.
Why do we need a database at all?
You know, if you use Rockbox on the N3 you won't need to sync any database!
Hello Joe
I have tried SongBird, and I have been really disappointed by this software! :( :(
There is a lot of bugs, and It is not a really practice bibliotheque multimedia!
I prefer any more MediaMonkey! it is the better way to organise a big music collection! Any more, it is possible to create our owner device plugin for N3!
N3 is a audio player specially conceived for music, and Media Monkey has got the same goal ;)
(Sorry for my bad Egnlish :()
Maybe
I'm a Linuxer, and the linux version of Songbird isn't out yet. It looks and sounds promising, and I'm sure the bugs will get ironed out, though I'm not sure if I'm likely to use it. Mostly what I want is for the N3 to be open enough for it to be easily integrated with most players.. especially the one I use, amaroK.
Agreed
I also want N3 because it's open and therefore should work with a variety of players. I anything Neuros should wait on KDE to port the libs to Windows. Then they will get amaroK which is one of the best players on the planet nad total free.
