February 12, 2007 is a day that will live in infamy. Well not really infamy because infamy is bad, but I don't know what the equivalently dramatic description for something good would be. I 'spose you could say it's a day that'll live in "fame" or something, but that doesn't really have much impact. Maybe "a day that will live in History," but that's REALLY lame.
Well, anyhow our man Anders of XMMS2 porting fame has done it again, this time with a transcoder which converts youtube files to something the OSD can play. Unfortunately Gao has to rain on this parade by revealing it doesn't play well yet, but still incredibly exciting that we can get a transcoder running on the OSD at better than realtime speeds. Obviously this opens a huge number of additional possible file formats, wrappers, streaming etc. We'll get the minor glitch of getting it to play well, we're hamering out these codec issues one by one!
Three Cheers to Anders! To learn how he did this using open source tools including ffmpeg codecs, and youtube fetcher script of his own devising, check out the mailing list thread on the subject.
