Why Do We Do This?

I recently wrote Steven Robertson to say thanks for his help. His response is one of the best articulations of why we're here. Everyone at Neuros knows that the community is the reason Neuros is around. It's easy to feel grateful, but Steven's message is an important reminder of the bigger issues we must not lose sight of:

JB: I know you're not into the mushy stuffy, so I won't belabor this point, but I deeply appreciate everything you have done for us, and ...I can only hope that one day you'll need a favor from us, from me, and we'll be able to repay the debt.

SR: As much as I may avoid mushy stuff, I can't help the fact that I am, I've always been, anidealist. I think open-source work is absolutely critical for the long-term success of the very idea of liberty itself. Call me a
libertarian cypherpunk, but I can't see a future where closed-source
software and the related "information economy" doesn't result in an
unavoidable elimination of free speech. Open source software seems to
me as the most useful thing I can do to ensure that free speech and
free press will always have an outlet on the internet. I don't count
you or Neuros among my debtors; it's my generation and the ones after
me that owe me and everyone else in the community (both ours and OSS
as a whole) the debt.
