NEUROS OSD YOUTUBE OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
Not many areas of the internet can inspire the imagination about the future of communication more than Internet video. Within a year of its inception, YouTube had already become a phenomenon that had changed elections and the media forever. Its removed barriers of communication that have existed since the inception of radio and television. Never before has the power to broadcast to the world been held in the hand of practically every individual with something to say.
Until you actually experience it, you might not appreciate how powerful moving that phenomenon to the TV set actually is. You might think it's just another screen in the house, but use it and you'll find it completely changes the way you use it. Instead of hunched over the computer alone, you'll find yourself sharing videos with your friends on the couch, or watching from bed just before sleep.
In the week since my family's been using this feature, I sent my dad a wish for his 80th birthday. I watched my sister and her husband watch, for the first time, the college movie she produced. I showed my parents the milk tea stand I visit near our China office, as well as a heroic dad pulling his quadriplegic son on a triathalon. Why hadn't we shared these before when there are computers right in the next room? I don't know, but I'm confident we're not unique. Ask yourself who will you share videos with if you could do it from the couch, and I'll bet you'll find yourself surprised. Spend a week actually doing it, and you'll soon realize that Internet video on the PC is barely scratching the surface of the new information revolution coming as we bring that experience to the TV.
Neuros is certainly not the only ones bringing net video to the TV, but we are probably the only CE company doing it with open source. Nowhere is the intersection between free software and free speech more obvious. If the connection between the internet and the TV falls into the hands of a proprietary vendor's closed solution, then the hard won free speech victory of the internet will fall far short of its ultimate potential.

The youtube revolution
There is no doubt that Web2.0 video has changed the world. My mom (67) just got her first laptop in her life. Every time I drop for a visit all I see she's doing is watching youtube. It's becoming a problem as my dad is feeling a bit neglected now :)

That is cool.
And it's cool that you share neat stuff with us even when it is in developmental stage. That makes it cool for those of us who are following the product line and such. I hope that you will also allow google videos and maybe some of the others like stage6, etc.

Very nice!
Just curious though - under what terms did Neuros obtain the necessary patent licenses for On2 VP6 and Sorenson Spark? My understanding is that that's been the primary barrier to the distribution of Free code that supports these codecs, and I was wondering how you solved it.
