OdNA

OdNT upgraded!

As I'm sure you've noticed, open.neurostechnology.com has been undergoing changes over the past few days. Most notably, we're (finally) running on Drupal 5.1, which comes with several very important improvements. The new version of Drupal frees us to explore a number of promising new methods of creating, organizing, and delivering information, both within the developer community and to the Neuros user base as a whole. Ultra-top-secret plans1 for these new ideas are already on the table, and I'm sure you'll be hearing more about them soon.

Some things were changed during the move, however, that will have an immediate impact on how you use this site. Of interest:

Preserve Freedom, Drink Coffee, Hack the Duck

Hack the Duck MugMaybe you've suffered some self-esteem issues.  There's no quick fix to issues of self worth, introspection is not easy work.  That being said, there's nothing wrong with looking for shortcuts, particuliarly if the benefits accrue to us.

Well, It's not often that a product comes around and offers a  chance to take a shot at redeeming yourself so cheaply and easily.  Buy the Hack the Duck Mug When you buy a Hack the Duck Mug, three things happen all at once.  First, the EFF's freedom fighters are immediately dispatched around the globe to fight the enemies of freedom wherever they may hide.  Second, you will become part of an elite fraternity of Neuros Hackers sworn to defend one another from common foes. Nevermind that we have yet to identify any foes or actually swear such an allegiance, nor the fact that your being a part of this "frat" would imply that you have also somehow consented to this vague agreement.  Moving on, the third thing that happens is that the people in close proximity to you will show a renewed interest in you.  The third effect is not fully understood by experts (mainly because no experts have noticed it or cared to even spend a second thinking about it) but it is believed to stem from the added mystery surrounding you due to this new mug that they cannot make heads or tails of.

Hacking Lunch with Gao (IRC meeting)

Out of deep respect for our European Duck Hackers we will be alternating between our famous "Breakfast with the Chairman" and a "Saturday Lunch with the Chairman" (at least it's lunch time in Chicago).

BitTorrent Showing up in Embedded Devices

Engadget has an article on BiTorrent Clients Coming to NASes... which is certainly an interesting development for us to watch.  We've previously talked about the risks of BT on the OSD but obviously nothing will clear up this issue like some actual case law.  Giv

Freeculture.org selects Anti-DRM Winners!

You might remember that Neuros Sponsored the Freeculture.org's anti- DRM contest

well, they have awarded winners, and you should check out the videos that won because they are really quite good, and you really aren't nearly as busy as you'd like to have other's believe.

Now, we just have to hope that SIMA wins the Macrovision Lawsuit

Who Killed Tivo2go?

EFF has a good article on the demise of TiVo2Go.  Hint:   It's the result of legislative victories of big media particuliarly on the Cablecard standard.  Big media essentially forced TiVo to choose between a number of their existing features and getting access to the cable content.  Obviously, given the choice, Neuros chose the other alternative with the OSD, but yo

Lunch with Gao- Bring Your Hacking Questions!

Out of deep respect for our European Duck Hackers we will be alternating between our famous "Breakfast with the Chairman" and a "Saturday Lunch with the Chairman" (at least it's lunch time in Chicago).

Chicago Hack Meeting Type Thing- Are You Lonely? Make Friends this Weekend!

Anyone in the Chicago area, you really should consider attending this crazy hacker thing.  It's a kind of "ask not what Neuros can do for you, ask what you can do for Neuros" type of thing:

One of the sessions I noticed was about hacking devices to do something new.  Someone needs to stand up and tell these poor folks theres a better way.  Anyhow, the offer for sponsorship (Wal-Mart tent and jug of cheap whisky) still stands for anyone willing to pimp our wares to the unsuspecting masses.  I would guess that personal hygene is not going to be real important for this thing, so I wouldn't waste a lot of money having your tuxedo taken in for this.

A Little Story About Open Source and the OSD

Everyone always asks about how the bounties are going and looks to the headlines to understand the benefits of open source.  Of course, that's definately a part of it, but at the recent Ohio Linux Fest,  I was struck by how often the minor details were cited as the reason a proprietary software project implementation failed, etc.  The reality is that any software has a host of minor bugs, but to any one user, a particuliarly "minor bug" can be a deal breaker.  A recently example on the OSD really illustrated that.
